Quick: where can you enjoy some of the finest cuisine around, then work it off over a friendly game of pool? Give up? Then head to Scully’s Tavern on Sunset Drive to find the answer.

For the past twenty years, Scully’s Tavern has been serving cold beer and hot cuisine to the locals of South Miami. But it seems the word is out, and now everyone from South Florida foodies to none other than Food Network’s Guy Fieri have made Scully’s a culinary destination. So what is it that draws the crowds to this unassuming little spot?

When they started the restaurant in 1989, owners Chris and Cass Hirsh had a vision. Chris had been in the culinary business since the age of fourteen, but left at twenty-six to go into construction. Then he and his wife Cass, a flight attendant, got an idea for a new kind of restaurant: a place that would combine very best food with a casual atmosphere.

“We wanted to create a neighborhood nook that was a friendly, cozy spot, but also featured higher-end cuisine than your average bar and grill,” says the couple. Mission accomplished. Walk into the bar during lunchtime or happy hour, and you’re bound to find a few regulars chatting it up with the college students and sports fans who have come to watch the big game on one of the bar’s many TV screens. In the festive main room and the more subdued Mahogany Billiard Room, you’ll also find discerning diners indulging not only in grill classics like Nachos and Loaded Skins, but also in specialties you won’t find at your average sports bar, like Escargot, Baked Brie and Mussels Provençal. There’s something for every palate on the Scully’s menu, and even the “usual” fare is hardly usual at all. Hirsh lends his French-restaurant training to dishes such as oysters with jalapeños and scampi wings, using fresh ingredients and creating from scratch an amazing new spin on the familiar.

But the dish that made Scully’s famous is the “In”crusted Dolphin Sandwich. It’s a six-ounce mahimahi fillet, battered and covered in an outrageous potato chip crust, served up on a Kaiser roll. Chris says that the recipe came in a flash when he was casting about for something to do with the crushed bits at the bottom of a bag of potato chips. The result: sheer genius. The sandwich is so good, in fact, it was featured on Guy Fieri’s television show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and the recipe can be found in the cookbook of the same name. Even though the secret is out, it’s still well worth a trip to Scully’s to try the original. As Fieri says of the Scully’s experience, “What you don’t expect, you’ll get here… and man it’s good.”

The specials menu changes daily, and features even more of Scully’s culinary creations. Or stop by for happy hour, where along with drink specials and promotions, you can enjoy a buffet from five to seven. Between the food, the beer and the camaraderie, you’re sure to become a regular yourself.
